It’s too easy to get swayed by nostalgia alone. Our visit to Spain was not primarily a chance to revel in what once was: a vibrant Jewish community that had been expelled, an intellectual curiosity and openness to interaction, the bending and reimagining of religious and cultural possibility. But the point of our trip to Spain, while heavy on its share of history, was not so much about Spain’s past. It was not about imagining what once was, but reimagining what can be. These photos do not merely attempt to capture the past, but to reimagine it.
