36+

Kivunim 2021-2022

How do we begin to understand the visual experience of knowledge?

238 days. 36 students. 10 countries. 7 Staff. 1 community.

What does 36+ mean?

36 is not only the number of students on the program, but it is a representation of 1 unique community of thinkers, explorers, questioners, artists, and dreamers. The plus symbol is a representation of the incredible faculty, who not only shaped and guided our community, but opened our perspectives to completely new ways of thinking, both as individuals and members of a greater whole.

Tobi Kahn has guided us in seeing a different visual world. Opening our eyes to new ways of looking at the spaces around us. Covering multiple art styles and mediums, Tobi has given us a broader view of how to respond to the visuals of the ever changing world around us and more importantly, how to capture it.

A common theme in our extensive lectures on the history of both the ancient and modern world is the telling of narratives. Devin Naar talked to us about the difficulty in finding the most accurate truth capable in history in areas which no one has written about. When are there enough sources and stories to apply the title of truth to it? What is truth and is it possible to truly achieve in the telling of history? This comes to the idea of narratives. The telling of history is from one's perspective through an inherent bias - to which lies the historians ultimate goal of removing all bias - which creates a narrative.

This exhibition is meant to tell our narrative, both collectively and independently. Each member of 36 has chosen one photo to give a glimpse into their narrative. Separated into one of six categories these narratives will follow a general theme to both guide and inspire the creativity and thinking of all 36.

This is not an exhibition. This is a story with 36 narratives, and you’re just on the first page.
