Our time with you began not at the Kotel but in the tranquil wilderness of the Negev. There, we embarked on our journey of the foundational Zionist idea of yediat haaretz: an intimate and sensual knowledge of the land of Israel. When we explored your nature - through sandy riverbeds, grassy hilltops, and stoney valleys - we came to appreciate the terrain our forefathers traversed, and the words of the Tanakh and Tehillim came to life. In that same landscape, we met Bedouins, slept in their meager tents and ate their generous food. They showed us a living example of the biblical hospitality Abraham expressed to the three angels; we saw in them a living fossil of the wandering nomadic Jews we once were.
